Motion Graphics: UP Title Sequence

Description

Create a title sequence of my favorite movie. This is my first motion graphics exploration and title sequence of the film Up. My concept was to portray a pleasant and dreamy journey of flying in the sky with balloons.

Design Process

I began sketcing a rough storyboard to plan out how to organize my title sequence. I wanted to introduce the main protagonists of the film as well as the feeling of flying, almost dancing to the breeze of the wind. Therefore I made it begin and end in the sky. For my moodboard, some of the feelings I was going for were colorful, playful, lively, and cheerful. I also wanted it to be graphic and cartoony to acheive a childhood dreamy feeling, almost as if it were made from cut out pieces of paper. These were some style frames that I created to get a more accurate grasp on my concept. The characters are a bit too rendered at the moment, so I decided to create my own illustrations to use as assets.

Reflection

I wanted to the flower petal to narrate the title sequence, so it begins with the flower and as the wind blows a single petal gets carreid away and develops the title sequence. This was my first exploration with After Effects and looking back there are more details for improvement. I think I could have worked more with text and their transitions as well as animating the characters with more life. Using this as a beginning, I think in my future explorations, I can build upon the experiences from this to improve.
