Exquisite Corpse

Description

Design a figure that has a head, an upper body, an a lower body. Then exchange different body parts with your peers. My group was only two people and I exchanged the upper body of Yiwen Xu's witch figure. Our two figures didn't have much of a story but rather was led by stylistic decisions. My figure was inspired by the Memphis design style, with simple geometries and bold, graphic colors. Yiwen's figure was a witch, with a dark color palette that set a mysterious mood. Therefore, when combined, I wanted to maintain the unique characteristics of both figures and incorporate them into one exquisite corpse. I executed this by keeping the geometric drawing style consistent, while integrating the dark color palette of the witch. When the mouse is pressed, the bright and happy figure changes into a spooky figure, almost as if the witch has taken over the body.

Design Process

On the left is the figure I drew, and on the right is the figure Yiwen drew. For this assignment, I first drew out the basic outline of the figure and determined what body parts had to be repeated. Certain body parts were modular and benefited a lot from having its own function. Other body parts I had to tweak the specific location of points and having its own function helped to make quick changes. When the drawing was complete, I wanted to specifically incorporate the eye of the witch because it gave so much personality to the figure. I integrated this aspect when the mouse was pressed, as well as many other colors that represent the witch taking over the body. The if and else statements became a bit repetitive, but the process really helped me understand the logic behind it.

Reflection

Overall, I enjoyed the process of defining and writing my own functions because it cleared up a lot of repetition. However, I do hope it could get more simplified and am looking forward to learning more about that in the coming weeks. Also, as I'm getting more familiar with the materials that were covered since week one, I feel more comfortable applying them to different situations.
